BY CAR:
Leave the M5 at junction 30 and stay on the inside of the slip road. At the traffic lights bear left onto the dual carriage way (for half a mile), stay on the inside lane. At next roundabout go straight over, signed Sidmouth (A3052).

You now continue on this road and you are about 8 miles from Sidmouth. After 6 miles you drive through the village of Newton Poppleford. On leaving the village you climb a fairly steep hill for half a mile and as you clear the brow of this hill the road bears to the left. Take the next right turn (just under half a mile) signed Sidmouth.

Although this is one of the three main routes into town it is a B road with no ideas of grandeur, so drive carefully. You continue along this road towards the town and at the next mini roundabout, you turn left (1st exit). At the next mini roundabout take the 1st exit left again. On your right you will see the Radway Inn, turn right here onto Salcombe Road. This road goes over a hump backed bridge, then bears to the left. Take the next turning right, you will see the brown signpost for the Norman Lockyer Observatory. You are now on Salcombe Hill and at the point that most visitors loose faith and wonder where on earth they are going. This is a steep hill, seven tenths of a mile long and the second half of the climb is tree covered.

At the very top of this hill is a difficult to see gateway on the left. Lookout for the white sign on the tree pointing left, turn in here. You will know if you are in the right place because you will see the silver domes on your right. If the domes are on your left you have gone too far. (who is navigating!) Our driveway is the first on the left through the five bar gate, drive slowly down, there is plenty of parking at the bottom.
